Atlantis, Once Lost, Now Found

Ever since people read the writings of Plato from 360 BC, they have been almost obsessed about finding it.

It is believed to of existed about 2600 years ago. Home to a great civilization, that according to Plato, disappeared overnight.

One of the problems is that apart from what Plato wrote, little else is known.

He wrote of a great city beyond the Pillars of Hercules. The pillars were the name in those times for the straits of Gibraltar. This has caused people to search the Atlantic Ocean and even the Caribbean Sea for signs of the lost city.

A team of scientists, led by Dr. Rainer Kuehne, of the US, believe that they may have at last found the lost city.

However, they did not find it in the Ocean but on the main land of Spain.

By studying satellite images of a salt marsh region of southern Spain, known as Marisma de Hinojos, near the city of Cadiz, they have located what appears to be a city ringed by walls, as Plato had described.

The scientists say they were led to this area because recent excavations of nearby towns, have displayed similarities to what is expected of Atlantis.

Their theory is that about 500 – 800 BC a Tsunami destroyed Atlantis and the returning waters covered the once coastal city in silt. They believe that possible survivors of the city, moved and built the towns nearby.

It certainly could be. The photos seem to match the description and size Plato mentioned. It is in Southern Spain, past the Pillars of Hercules. It had only been assumed that it was under the sea somewhere.

When will we know?

That will depend, as there is a slight problem. The area concerned is located within Spain’s Donana National Park and so any archeologists will have to be very diplomatic and convincing, in order to start their excavations.

If this is Atlantis, its secrets have been hidden for 2600 years, I am sure another couple will not hurt.
