Technology and Education

By

Texting

 With todays rapidly growing advances in technology, is our childrens education being left behind.

My main concern are the advances in the telecommunications industry. Specifically cell phones.

Certainly, it is great to chat with anybody pretty much at any time. However, have you noticed how quickly the children can text. Yet given a pen and paper, they almost freeze. They almost immediately learn the unofficial shorthand used in texting but can they remember how to spell words from the dictionary.

I greatly approve of the younger generation being able to communicate freely, as it must surely improve their social interaction but why must it be done in some kind of "electronic creole".

Why can't these companies bring out some versions that are especially modified for parents to give their children, if they wished to. These modified versions would include a spell checker. If a word was spelt incorrectly then the message could not be sent.

I believe that childrens ability to spell correctly, would greatly improve, almost overnight.

I am all for advances in technology but, lets do it in a rational manner, that will not affect our childrens education by skipping over some of the basic subjects.

Daniel V. Thanks for your comment. You are right, although I think that many, later, regret they didn't get a better education. Maybe their should be a 2 year work programme for kids between junior and high schools. Then maybe the highschoolers would appreciate their classes more.

Those devices would be great but they wouldn't last too much on the market because

- for too many, money are more important than education;

- kids (but not only, unfortunately) are more interested in shortcuts IRC-style (like "h r u" instead of "how are you");

- if laziness would hurt, aliens would hear the Earth screaming (here's a heading: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/engadget-rides- )

rafken YOU ASKED FOR IT, SO: Your idea is a really good one. It is well written. It is not well developed. It should be longer. You need photos. Your out going links take your readers to interesting hubs, you might want to re-consider that and sending reader away from you, these won't come back to you. Link to your other hubs. I would steal this idea from you if I could, and then develop it a little more put pictures with it. LOL Great idea....love the context.
