Makes a Good Supervisor, Autocratic?
The Ability to Diversify
It is generally thought that there are two kinds of supervisors. The first is the autocratic supervisor and the second is the consultative supervisor.
The autocratic supervisor, on being given a task, will immediately tell his workers what needs to be done and how to do it. He is self confident and experienced.
The consultative supervisor, on being given a task, will gather his workers explaining what needs to get done and ask for any suggestions. On receiving all suggestions decides, on his experience, which will be the most efficient and tells the workers to do it that way.
There is however a third kind of supervisor, the one I believe to be the best. The third one is the one capable of being either of the above, with the wisdom of being the correct kind at the correct time.
Sometimes there is not enough time for discussion, a course of action needs to be taken immediately. The supervisor has then to have the ability to be autocratic. If time permits, being consultative can have its advantages. It helps to mould a team into a cohesive unit. The workers feel that they are playing an important role and are a valued member of the team.
Lets’ not forget that bosses do not have a monopoly on good ideas, they can come from anywhere.
The efficiency of any team is reliant on the workforce available. The higher the moral of that workforce the more efficient. Therefore it is always important to be fair. A supervisor does not necessarily dictate the amount of work that needs to be done but he alone can ensure that it is spread evenly between the workers available. Work has no place for “teacher’s pets” or personal antagonisms.
As supervisors, we cannot say if we are good or not, that will be decided by our superiors and subordinates.
